Christmas Program

Our annual Christmas Program is this tonight, December 18th. Students will meet in the classrooms at 7:00 p.m. After dropping off the students, parents should go directly to the church. The children will change into their costumes in the classroom. The program begins directly after  Mass around 7:40 pm. After the program, the students will return to the classrooms and should be picked up there.

Christ Child Mass

            On Friday, December 21st, St. Luke Catholic School will have its annual Christ Child Mass. This is our school Christmas celebration and marks the beginning of the Christmas holidays. We would like to encourage all to attend with their children.
            Part of our tradition is to collect baby items at this Mass as symbolic gifts to the Christ Child. These items will be donated to the White Rose Center to help mothers and babies in need. Second grade is asked to bring baby wipes or diapers.

Christmas Program Costumes

If your child is providing his or her own costume, it must be brought to school on Monday for dress rehearsal. Please send it in bag labeled with the student's name.

Gregory-donkey: We have costume. See note below.
Belinda-Mary: Bring costume on Monday.
Eliseo-Angel:  Bring robe on Monday.
Joshua-Singer-Night of program wear black pants, white shirt, black or red tie; doesn't need for dress rehearsal
Alexia-Angel: Bring costume on Monday.
Emmanuel-Bring cow head on Monday. See note below.
Diego-sheep: We have costume.See note below.
Frida-sheep: bring costume on Monday.
Polycarp-Joseph (We have costume.)
Jayden-bird (We have costume.) See note below.
Andrew- Angel: bring robe on Monday.

If Manny, Gregory, and Diego could wear black long-sleeved shirts and black pants, and Jayden wear a white long-sleeved shirt with black (or school) pants, that would help them look the part. Their costumes are pretty minimal so whatever they're wearing will be very visible to everyone.

Christmas Party

We will be having our Holiday Christmas Party next Friday at 10:45 a.m. We will have pizza delivered to the school – this will be taken care of by the front office. There are11 students in the class.

We will need the snacks for the party:

3  boxes of juice packs (i.e.: Capri Suns)

2 dozen Christmas cookies

Grapes or fruit salad

Plates, napkins, and flatware

We also need candy, pencils, pens, erasers or small toys (i.e.: yo-yo, stickers, bubbles) for the goody bags. There can only be one goody bag per child.

-Breakfast with Santa is tomorrow. For $5, your child can have a photo with Santa plus a donut and juice or hot chocolate. The breakfast begins at 7 a.m. in the cafeteria and ends at 8. Parents may not take pictures with their own cameras.
-Students arriving before 7:45 who are not attending the Breakfast with Santa should come to the Parish Hall for Morning Supervision.
-Students will need to bring their Christmas Program costumes to school by Monday at the latest. Please place costume in a labeled bag.

Thanksgiving Luncheon
Our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon is tomorrow, Thursday, November 15th. Mrs. Carruth and the 8th grade parents will be serving turkey with all the trimmings. Please make plans to join us!

Lunch times will be approximately:
11:00 PreK and Kinder
11:30 1st and 2nd
11:45 3rd, 4th, and 5th
12:25 6th, 7th, and 8th

Families with more than one student should come at the lunch time of the youngest child and the older children will be called to join you.

Cost: $8 per adult and $5 per child. No other lunch will be served that day. If your child will not be eating the luncheon, a sack lunch will be needed. The Twelve Oaks lunch accounts cannot be used for this meal.

Students who are not able to have a family member join them can still purchase the luncheon.

Christmas Parade

The Irving Christmas Parade will be December 2nd and St. Luke will have a float!

Permission slips were sent home today for families who wish to participate. The parade is on a Saturday. Also, we would like to see at least one parent from each grade help plan the float. Please contact me or Mrs. Carruth if you can help.

Cold Season

It is that time of the year, unfortunately....
Coughs, fevers, and other cold symptoms are popping up. Today we discussed good hygiene: wash hands often, avoid touching eyes, hands, and noses, cough into elbow instead of hands.

Please remember sweaters and jackets. We go out to morning recess before 10 and the temperature is still cool.

    Happy Feast of St. Luke!
    Please check out the video the students made. They worked in pairs to research his life using books and the computer. Then they contributed the facts they found to the video and made suggestions for pictures and timing. We have shared it with the rest of the school and received many compliments!

    Conference Requests
    Thanks for returning the conference forms so quickly. I have almost all of them in and there were very few conflicts. You will receive a confirmation of your scheduled time in next Wednesday's folder. If you have not returned your request yet, please do so as soon as possible.

    Religion Project
    Our All Saints' Day religion project began today and the students have all the details to share with you. Look for two papers in the homework folder. Tonight they should choose a saint and let me know tomorrow. They are required to choose a saint they have not done before.

    Accelerated Reader



    Click to viewThe Accelerated Reader party will be tomorrow, Thursday, October 4, 2012.  Due to some computer difficulties, not all students were able to take tests, so all 1st through 5th graders are invited to the Kickoff party. Students may come in Casual Uniform (St. Luke shirt with jeans) on Thursday. The following first through fifth grade students were able to test and meet their Accelerated Reader goals for September!  The stars indicate the top point earner in each grade.

     All of the students in the second grade made their goals in September! Special congratulations go to fifth-grader Teresa, who earned the most points this month out of all the 1st-5th grade classes.  In second place was fifth-grader Jaihan and in third place was second-grader Joshua.

    Parents:  If you can help with the AR party on Thursday, we need cookies, napkins, juice and cups.  Please send donations to Mrs. Heaton on Thursday morning. The party will be at 1:30 in the Cafeteria. Safe Environment trained volunteers are needed to help serve and supervise. Thank you!

    Blessing of the Animals
    
    In honor of the Feast of St. Francis, we will have our annual blessing of the animals tomorrow, Oct. 4th. Parents may bring a leashed or caged pet to the church plaza at 9 a.m. After the blessing, the pets must be taken home right away. For students who are unable to bring a live pet, they may bring a small- to medium-sized stuffed animal with them in the morning.

    Safe Environment Training
    We are hoping to reach the goal of having 100% of our class parents certified as safe environment trained. By reaching this goal, all of the children can enjoy having their parents participate in field trips and school events. The deadline for training is next Tuesday, October 2nd. Computers will be available at that time for doing the online renewals and there will be a training session for new trainees. Renewals can also be done anywhere by going to http://cathdal.org/pages/a-safe-environment, but must be completed by October 2nd. If you complete your renewal online, please email or bring the verification to Mrs. Carruth as soon as possible.

    Looking Ahead

    The second graders have received several compliments (and a treat from Mrs. Carruth) for their leading of the prayers over the last two weeks. Thank you for getting them there on time. Thursday will be the last day of our turn.

    Friday-Mass
    Please join us for Mass this Friday. Our first group of Disciples' List nominees will be announced. The virtue this month is Honesty.

    Monday-Living Rosary
    We practiced for the Living Rosary today. Please make plans to join us on Monday, October 1st, at 9 a.m. in front of the church.

    Accelerated Reader List

    Through the suggestion of one of the parents, I have added a link for our Accelerated Reader Quiz list. The link takes you to a Google Doc spreadsheet which lists the quizzes owned by the school. Although you cannot search or sort it online, you can download it as an Excel sheet. Then it should be searchable and  sortable.  Please let me know if you have any difficulty accessing it.

    •  Volleyball: Our girls have their only home games of the season at the St. Luke Gym at 9am and 12 noon. Come and cheer them on. They are undefeated so far.
